Throughout history, mankind has always struggled to evolve and seek new vision towards the future. Whether it be socially, economically, psychologically, or religiously, we have always been looking for new ideas and answers to satisfy our extraneous need for change. Our society has never reached a point where all spectrums of life have been perfect. Great leaders continue to pass through history, and incredible strides towards an ideal society are made every day. Is that to say that we are close to a utopian civilization, where all men and women alike can live in peace and equality. Well, we aren’t exactly close to this, but we know that we want this and dream for this. Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by loss or destruction of the fetus before birth (Hogue 1). It’s a topic that is almost always charged with emotion. Abortion has been practiced since ancient times in almost every culture. Despite humankind’s long exposure to the topic, they can still find no common outlook on it.

Abortion has been around since the beginning of civilization. Dates as early as 53 B.C.E. show evidence that abortions took place (Rein 4). Abortions have been done approved or disapproved in almost every culture throughout history. Even in ancient times no common ground could be established on the subject. In Ancient Assyria aborting a baby was punishable by death. Ancient Greeks and Romans on the other hand, promoted abortion as a form of population control. In fact some of the most revered philosophers in history, such as Plato (428-347 B.C.E.) and Aristotle (384-322 B.C.E.) strongly approved the use abortion. On the other side Hippocrates (460-370 B.C.E.) and Pythagorean (unknown) two also revered philosopher, had a very different view. They both disapproved of use abortion (Rein 4). (more…)

My argument will be for the death penalty because it is not actually justice killing a person but if that person goes out and kills another, than he or she should have the death penalty. “The death penalty is our harshest punishment. It is irrevocable: it ends the existence of those punished, instead of temporarily imprisoning them” (p.440). It is the serious and best punishment for murderers, and therefore we should not abolish the death penalty. If we abolish the death penalty, the murder rate will mostly likely increase because the murderer would be like, ah, all I have to do is go to prison for life and try to get parole. This would not be fair to the victim’s family, whose life was erase by a murderer. Death is more fearful than life imprisonment, so murderers who are sentence to death would rather have life imprisonment. What would be the reason for a murderer to be living in this world after taking the life of another person? (more…)

The United Stated of America is commonly referred to as a melting pot. The fact that we as a nation can encompass so many different cultures, religions, and economic aspects is amazing. Even though we intertwine these cultural differences in a respectful manner, we can’t help at times to become bias towards others customs and lifestyles. Many questions arise about this subject. Can we effectively live together and respect others cultures and values? I began to examine this topic by exploring two texts: a short story written by B. Traven called “Assembly Line,” and a chapter out of Alan Thein Durning’s “How Much Is Enough” named “The Conundrum of Consumption”. (more…)
