Trip to Wonderland
I closed my eyes. It was early morning and the airplane just took off. I was going on another fantastic vacation with my family. It was my first trip to the West Coast. It was planned to be a ski trip, but for me it was more than just that. It was another adventure, something new that would leave joyful memories about my time in the United States of America.
We landed in Portland, Oregon, rented a car, and headed toward Mount Hood. It was marvelous to observe how the weather and nature was changed during our drive to the mountain. Gradually the snow appeared. We even had to put tire chains on the car. Giant and mighty pine trees towered over the road. We entered a winter wonderland. The landscape was impressive. I felt as if I were transported back in time to my childhood, to the fairy tales my mom read to me. During our trip we visited two mountains: Mount Hood and Mount Bachelor. The second one located south of the first one. For this reason, the scenery was different too, the appearance varied. If Mount Hood was mightier, Mount Bachelor was more graceful. The size of the trees, the branches, and the shape was dissimilar. In Mount Bachelor the branches were smaller, but there were more of them than Mount Hood. There was a lot of snow at the both places. That was shocking white as the sun reflected off of it. Also we saw the snowfall. The snowflakes were airy and giant. They were covering the ground and blinding us with their beauty. Between two mountains was a desert. I was straggled to understand how the desert with the burned grass on red colored ground could exist between two snow covered mountains. There was a pool that was fed with water from a natural mineral spring. We swam there with a great pleasure.
During our visit we stayed in a condo at Government Camp at the bottom of Mount Hood. Not far away from the condo were a pool and a hot tub under the open sky. It was a perfect place to relax after a flight, to chat with relatives, and just to enjoy the company of each other. We were swimming in the warm water, refreshing in the cool air, and enjoying the spectacular view of Mount Hood among the trees. After relaxing in the hot tub we ran all together barefoot in the snow back to the condo. At that moment I was thinking about a Russian banya, in which after steaming people simply jump in the snow. The evening was quiet and peaceful, like almost all of them. We had dinner, read books, and played games with kids. My favorite one was “Apples to Apples”. The most memorable evening for me was when we went to Silcox Hut at Timberline lodge, seven thousand feet above sea level. The only way to get there was a Snowcat. The castle reminded me of the Middle Ages in Europe. It was hard to imagine: the floor and walls were made of stone, the lights were subdued, the dinner and red wine were delicious, and the fire was warming. It was romantic. However, I did not sleep that night. The snowstorm outside was so strong, that I could hear the moan of the wind. I had a feeling that I was in a Haunted Castle. The next morning we went back down the mountain.
The most exciting part of my trip was learning how to ski. On my first lesson I learned the basic movements and practiced on the small hill. But after a while we decided that it was time for me to try the bigger and more challenging hill. We went to the easiest one. However, for me it was terrifying. It was longer and steeper, and I did not know what to expect next after each turn. My first experience was painful. I fell each three meters. I quickly learned how to get up perfectly now. Later that week I learned how to turn, stop, increase and decrease my speed. By the end of our trip I was doing much better. I could control myself. It was thrilling to fly down the hill fearless, to feel the speed. It was a perfect exercise not just for my body, but also for my mind. By the end of each day I felt my sore muscles. It was a pleasant pain of learning something new.
I had an incredible experience during that vacation. The place was outstanding. Whether it was snowing or shining the view was gorgeous anyway. During that week I realized that some dreams could come true.
