The workforce in society today is different to the ones of the past, where different methods had been put into practice. Modern organisation today would need to address the diversity of people such as age, ethnicity, religion, gender and class and also the stress that would be evident in the workforce. The essay will look at the certain cases of diversity and causes of stress apparent in the organisation and how the post modern theories of management such as workplace democracy, and feminist theories have contributed to the organisation’s solution in dealing with the issues. Before delving into the post modern management theories and examples, the idea of stress and diversity will be analysed and how post-modern management can be an effective solution.

Pepper (1995) explains that in the workplace or at home, emotion of constantly being challenged. Tension may co-exist in a supervisor and subordinate position and conversation of confidential or personal matters may trigger emotions at work. Areas of conflict in the organisation can exist in the organisation itself, the department, boss, sub-cultural group, or individual colleagues. Emotions on betrayal, dedication, anger, disappointment, hate or jealousy can be provoked. With emotional behaviour, stress can also be a common factor in the workforce; it is also increasing in modern life. The result of stress can lead to a burnout, emotional and physical exhaustion, depersonalisation and lack of personal accomplishment. Common stressors are dealing with the workload, quantitive problems such as having too much work, staff shortage, and company downsizing. Communication is a process that involves several parties that engage in a specialized kind of negotiation. Thinking of communication involves thinking of all factors that determine what kind of communication takes place and factors that affect it. Conflict resolution is among the issues that embrace communication.

Conflict is a tentative issue that may require one to do a careful analysis on the choice of words, mannerisms and what parties to be involved. This is because the way a conflict is handled can either reduce or aggravate the conflict. On the other hand communication is not constant. Though there may exist some standardized principles to communicate changes occur when different environments are involved (Tidwell 89).

After a detailed discussion of how language, national, ethnic and religious identities form a person’s identity, Joseph concludes this article with “homogenisation is impossible”.   Although he sees a movement toward globalization, he does not see that English will become the dominant language because the identities of individuals are wrapped up in their language as spoken in their particular community.  He believes that “those minority language communities which have moved toward a regionally marked variety of a major language… have not entirely forsaken linguistic diversity, even if [it] has been compromised.  And it is not the case that their particular version of the language represents a failure to assimilate fully.  It is a form of linguistic resistance.”

In what ways have ethnic minority children in Britain and the USA been discriminated against in the education system because of their use of language? To what extent can bilingual/bidialaectal education benefit these children?

While the link between language and educational advantage has been well-established, the efficacy of the various strategies designed to address this issue have been the subject of much debate. Dialects used by West Indian and African American students were traditionally classified as inferior forms of English and thus viewed as a problem rather than an asset or resource in the classroom, which resulted in an unfortunate history of biased educational processes that tended to discriminate against the use of such non-standard English by ethnic minority children. There has since been an evolution in educational ideology in which many linguists and educators have come to view language diversity as a resource that can be particularly beneficial in the relatively new area of multicultural education.
