In the extract “Adolescence” from Bob Geldof’s autobiography “Is That It?” there are numerous issues such as sex, peer group, fashion, music and religion raised in the extract. Geldof uses strategies and techniques that positions me as a reader to respond in a certain way to the issues represented in the text.

One way that Geldof positions us to respond to fashion is by the technique, point of view. It is through first person’s point of view where the secret thoughts of a single character are transposed. And that happened through Geldof’s point of view. (more…)

This is an essay on the film directed by Kazan and the book A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. I will focus on scene 3, the poker game. This is a critical point of the relationships between Stanley, Blanche and Stella.

Stanley and Stella are married and live in the down stairs of a flat. Eunice and Steve occupy the top story. The role in their relationship is reversed compared to Stanley and Stella’s, with Eunice being the more dominant.

Blanche is Stella’s sister and they have not seen each since they lived at Belle Reve. Blanche arrives on a streetcar named Desire, so this is were the title presumably came from. The poker game symbolises the relationship between Stanley and Blanche and the ‘game’ they play. (more…)

When is mob justice justified? Is it true that justice acts too slowly and therefore should we commend the people who take the law into their own hands for their quick thinking and swift punishment for wrongdoing? Both of the novels The Ox-Bow Incident and To Kill a Mockingbird, by Walter Van Tilburg Clark and Harper Lee respectively, demonstrate the consequences of mob violence and punishment without trial. It can be deduced that mob justice, or people acting on what they think is right and not observing what the law says, is not justified in any case. Too many problems arise when justice is not left for the courts to decide. This is observed in The Ox-Bow Incident, where a mob gathers and lynches several suspected criminals, but only results in even more death for several innocent people. (more…)

My  opinion  about  all  individuals  of  this  world  is  that  we  are  all  like  story  books and  novels. Every  individual  has  his  story  to  share and  tell. There  are  moments  of happiness  and   so  the  moments  of  grief  too. The  moments  of  happiness  usually  passes quickly  than  the  sad  ones.  Since, I   am  one of  those  individuals  too, I  have  my  story  too, a  true   story  about  myself.

The  problems  are  a  part  of  everyone’s  life, my  problem  was  related  to  my  health and  it  started  at  a  very  early  age. I  was  a  very  active  child  of  my  time, enjoyed  every single  minute  of  my  life  till  I  was  six. I  did  not  even  know  the  correct  spelling of jaundice  and  small  pox, these  two  diseases  attacked  me  at  this  age. The  main  problem was  my  eyes  and  my  appearance  which  was  completely  changed  .  I   could  see  things but  could  not  face  even   a  little  bit  of  light. I  became  very  skinny,  the  situation  of  my eyes  was  so  terrible,  I   could  hardly  open  them  due  to  itching  and  redness. (more…)

America has always been known for its many freedoms: religion, speech, press, to bear arms, and the right to a fair and speedy trial.  Thomas Jefferson said in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.  America is world-renowned for this philosophy and yet there are still groups of people who feel discriminated against.  In today’s society, the greatest dilemma we face is with sexual orientation.

At a park bench, two men are kissing.  At a nearby coffee shop, two women are holding hands.  Why do people stare and look down upon these couples, but not on a man and woman couple?  The issue of gay rights has always been a matter of discussion in America and probably always will be.  The site selection took place in Los Angeles, a city of great diversity.  We welcome different races and religions with open arms and the state of California has always been Democratic with the majority of the people living there liberals. It is a relatively new practice to consider women in history and to examine the possible impact of their feminine perspectives. On the tails of Great Man Theory which relied on the biographies of great men at the exclusion of all other contributors, it is now far more acceptable to focus on societal and environmental factors that influenced history and to take account of previously excluded groups of people, including the contributions of women. Think of Aspasia and her persuasion on ancient thinking. When studying women like Aspasia, we raise a variety of significant questions relating to the influence of their feminine perspectives, hypothesizing that they voiced a feminine perspective at all. Judging from the fragments we have available to us concerning Aspasia one could argue that she does introduce a kind of rhetoric that is particularly female. (more…)
