Since the initiation of the European colonial conquest in 1492, the First Nations people of the “Americas” have been treated unfairly. The residential schools are a major example of the mistreatment of indigenous peoples in Canada. This paper will discuss the impact of residential schools on First Nations people, and how these institutions have characterized Native people within their communities and within Canadian society. It will subsequently assess the current situation, looking at contemporary issues of disparity within Native communities, and the educational initiatives in place to alleviate the inequality within these communities, and within the larger educational context. Criminal justice is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that offenders or law breakers corrected through the legal correctional means. In the process of correcting them, criminal justice students will be interested to see how the legal proceedings are conducted, and if there are any ethics followed. When we compare criminal justice systems and the ethical aspects, we first must bring some questions to the fore.
First, is it ethically proper to cross examine a witness with the aim of discrediting their credibility when the lawyer knows well that the witness is telling the truth? Secondly, is it ethical to have a witness give testimony when the lawyer knows well that the witness will commit perjury? (Henry M, 2006). (more…)
Sociologists and Human Resource managers alike are constantly seeking new methods to motivate people at work; the interest to this subject is fully understandable, as motivated employees are capable of generating more profit for the company than distressed ones. “The media bombard the public with colorful stories of young people working 80- and 90-hour weeks for months and years in the hope of breaking through to the ranks of the mega-wealthy.” (Erez, p. 5) However, it is apparent that at a certain level (in terms of one’s position), money is not the most efficient motivator at work anymore. One doesn’t need to shed blood or offer his body to be burned just to become a hero. Touching lives and making a big difference is enough. Such are teachers.
Teachers are our modern day yet unsung heroes. They are surrogate parents, molders of young minds, and the epitome of integrity.
The school is our second home and within the portals of this institution are unsung heroes who spend their time, effort, and even money to make our educational journey worthwhile. Our teachers, like real moms and dads, shower us with love and understanding by providing a wholesome learning environment and by teaching us the necessary skills to survive in this harsh world. Furthermore, they give their best to make us learn, putting their patience to the test, so long as we can finally learn to stand on our own feet. (more…)
In what ways have ethnic minority children in Britain and the USA been discriminated against in the education system because of their use of language? To what extent can bilingual/bidialaectal education benefit these children?
While the link between language and educational advantage has been well-established, the efficacy of the various strategies designed to address this issue have been the subject of much debate. Dialects used by West Indian and African American students were traditionally classified as inferior forms of English and thus viewed as a problem rather than an asset or resource in the classroom, which resulted in an unfortunate history of biased educational processes that tended to discriminate against the use of such non-standard English by ethnic minority children. There has since been an evolution in educational ideology in which many linguists and educators have come to view language diversity as a resource that can be particularly beneficial in the relatively new area of multicultural education. They do not fight wars, end famine or rescue small children from burning buildings. Yet, at least according to some Renaissance-era boosters, they are heroes. Though they may not have led battalions, their accomplishments on the canvas were thought to be of such magnitude that, according to many, they deserved heroic praise and treatment. (Barolsky, 1998.) Two artists of their time who may deserve such accolades- emphasizing the qualifier- were Berthe Morisot and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Though their work did not necessarily put their lives and bodies in danger, they, and many contemporary impressionists were heroes for daring to defy convention.
Berthe Morisot was born into a wealthy French family where she was taught to appreciate art from an early age. However, this appreciation did not mean that she should have sought to make art her life’s work and Morisots’ decision to do so was surely a surprising one. (more…)
Casinos facing substantial competition experience lower rates of profits than casinos operating as monopolies or oligopolies. Casinos in Illinois, for example, experience little to no competition within their market boundaries and as a result, most of them have experienced very high profit rates. The situation has changed somewhat for some of them since have opened in Indiana. Monopoly or oligopoly market structures resulting in above normal profit rates, in economic terminology, positive economic profits or positive economic rents, affect the local economy in a very different way than in a competitive market with normal profit rates. For example, profit rates before corporate taxes above 30 percent of gross revenues, even higher for some casinos, represent in general a much higher share of total revenues than do expenditures on wages and salaries. If a large share of profits is reinvested locally or distributed to local shareholders, most of the income stay in the local economy, the positive impact can be large; otherwise, the positive impact will be small. According to three sources, there are several types of outsourcing services. They are described below. The first kind of outsourcing service is that of technology services which includes creating networks, electronic commerce models and building applications etc. another type is that of business process outsourcing that deals with “finance / accounting, human resources, logistics, procurement / supply chain management, security”.
Another source says that the two types of outsourcing are ‘traditional’ and ‘green field’ outsourcing. In a ‘traditional’ outsourcing technique, the client company provides the outsourcing team with an existing function and its management. The client company will not have a new operation for the team to handle but rather concentrates mainly on management of a specific function. (more…)
