Safe School and Safe School Planning

Safe schools are schools that ensure that they are taking all safety measures in according to requirements of the Schools Commission. In order to ensure safety in school the schools need to build capacity that will support safety. The schools also have to communicate to students clear and direct messages about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable in school, in case of students breaking the school regulations then the school administration is supposed to make sure that the student adheres to the rules, and the rules are supposed to be enforced consistently by the school authorities. Emphasis on student responsibilities is important. In accountability it is important also that the students should be taught critical thinking techniques to enable the students to consider carefully their decisions. (more…)

Come Little Children

Little children are little cherubs from heaven who lost their way and found themselves trapped in this world of ours. No wonder they are so pure and innocent, so faithful and loving, so forgiving and so divine- they still have something heavenly in them! It’s such a pity that they lose this angelic touch in them as they grow more and more a part of this world. For me, it seems that as they are drawn away from heaven, these little children lose their luster of innocence.

Children are such a source of joy as they bring so much lightness of heart and tenderness of emotions that they lilt like the lines of poetry. Yes, they are cute little verses running on little feet! Wasn’t it Alfred Lord Tennyson, poet laureate of the Victorian Age who in his “Children’s Hour” paid tribute to the “patter of little feet”? Or William Wordsworth who wrote and said that “the child is father to the man”? (more…)

Art of Facing Problems

My  opinion  about  all  individuals  of  this  world  is  that  we  are  all  like  story  books and  novels. Every  individual  has  his  story  to  share and  tell. There  are  moments  of happiness  and   so  the  moments  of  grief  too. The  moments  of  happiness  usually  passes quickly  than  the  sad  ones.  Since, I   am  one of  those  individuals  too, I  have  my  story  too, a  true   story  about  myself.

The  problems  are  a  part  of  everyone’s  life, my  problem  was  related  to  my  health and  it  started  at  a  very  early  age. I  was  a  very  active  child  of  my  time, enjoyed  every single  minute  of  my  life  till  I  was  six. I  did  not  even  know  the  correct  spelling of jaundice  and  small  pox, these  two  diseases  attacked  me  at  this  age. The  main  problem was  my  eyes  and  my  appearance  which  was  completely  changed  .  I   could  see  things but  could  not  face  even   a  little  bit  of  light. I  became  very  skinny,  the  situation  of  my eyes  was  so  terrible,  I   could  hardly  open  them  due  to  itching  and  redness. (more…)

Disadvantages of Outsourcing

Along with the pros of outsourcing, there are also some cons associated with the term. Outsourcing is not beneficial in all cases and situations. In some situations, outsourcing may be more of hazardous to the organization rather than advantageous. This is the reason why pros and cons must be weighed before the decision to outsource is made.

“A disadvantage to outsourcing is that you are putting part of your company in someone else’s hands. You have to ask yourself if you can trust them, if you think they’ll stay in business and if they can adapt to your growing/changing needs.” (more…)

Legalized Gambling

The term gambling has had many different meanings depending on the cultural and historical context in which it is used. Currently, in Western societies, it has an economic definition, referring to “wagering money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods”. Typically the outcome of the wager is evident within a short period of time. The term gaming in this context typically refers to instances in which the activity has been specifically permitted by law. The two words are not mutually exclusive; i.e.: a gaming company offers legal gambling activities to the public. In our highly technical society where machine-tooled perfection is an ideal, the gambler has acquired a bad press. He is frequently viewed as an erratic, unstable, and irresponsible sort, driven by unknown forces to take foolish and unnecessary chances. (more…)

E-Mail Manners: Have You Understood This?

The other day our teacher at the technical writing class announced, “Today we are going to talk about using E-Mail as an excellent means of communication”. I thought ‘here it comes, at last I will know more about this’. Like many people in India, I was a latecomer to E-Mail, that too only when it was forced upon me. My father was ill after a stroke and I had to often correspond with my sister in the United States. I noticed that her E-Mails always began with ‘Sunder’. Never was it ‘Dear Sunder’. Her replies to my long and meandering E-Mails were often short and sometimes sounded even curt. I was concerned a bit in the beginning. I still am, although I have got used to it a little. Like every communication tool E-Mail came armed with a danger to ruin even our most intimate relationships forever. (more…)

UK Tourism Industry

The UK leisure industry represents businesses as diverse as tour operators and football clubs and is estimated to be worth about ?1.7 billion a week. An analysis of household spending during 2003 revealed that the proportion of disposable income spent on leisure activities is almost identical in terms of proportions of income across diverse socio-economic groups, regardless of whether individuals are in employment or unemployed. In generic terms, individuals will spend 13.5% of their total income on recreation and culture, they will spend 14.3% of their total income on transport and they will spend 9.8% of their total income on restaurants and hotels. Philosophy and the Good Life

Philosophy had been studied for countless centuries by great people, wise men, and common people. It is not because they have to construct what philosophy is and its importance to humanity and the world as a whole, but to make its existence concrete and become usable to where it is ought to be used. The concept of philosophy is abstract and even before the existence of the humanity and the world, it was already there. Its idea was laid down in words through time to be used by people for the coming ages. But its usefulness and significance still depends how we absorb and utilize them.

The word “Philosophy” itself means “love of wisdom” (Thomas). It came from Greek words “Philo” (love) and “Sophia” (wisdom). Therefore, it means devotion to know. Philosophy deals with different aspects and some of these significant concerns are metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, politics, and aesthetics (Thomas; Thomas). Metaphysics studies the theory of reality, epistemology studies the theory of knowledge, and ethics studies the theory of moral values (Thomas). (more…)

Fast Food’s Link to Obesity

People think that the nutritional values of fast food won’t harm their health. However they are more likely to increase the risk of obesity due to excessive gorging. According to experts at the medical research council, a lot of fast food is dense in calories. A human being just needs a small amount to increase the calories. Experts believe that fast food can fool people into absorbing excess calories. They feel that the human body was never built to cope with such heavy food. According to an expert, a fast food meal has a very high energy density. It is 1.5 times higher than a traditional British meal and 2.5 times more powerful than an African meal. Fast food can be blamed for obesity and weight gain.

Testimonials from experts regarding Fast Food’s Link to obesity:
According to Advertising Age, the food industry spending runs about $10 billion per year on its advertisement budget. It has been estimated that McDonald’s spends more than $1 billion while Coke spends more than $800 million. The more this keeps up the more unhealthy people we shall have.

Professor Andrew Prentice, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has been quoted as “We all possess a weak innate ability to recognize foods with a high energy density.

“We tend to assess food intake by the size of the portion, yet a fast food meal contains many more calories than a similar-sized portion of a healthy meal.”

“Since the dawn of agriculture, the systems regulating human appetite have evolved for the low energy diet still being consumed in rural areas of the developing world where obesity is almost non-existent.”

“Our bodies were never designed to cope with the very energy dense foods consumed in the West and this is contributing to a major rise in obesity.”

Dr Susan Jebb, of the MRC Human Nutrition Research Centre, also quotes
“Fast food companies could play a major part in halting the rise in obesity if they adopted a more positive attitude to healthy eating such as providing meals of lower energy density, appropriately marketed and with point-of-sale nutrition labelling.”

“If we’re going to stem the tide of obesity, it’s important that we don’t just swap one unhealthy meal for another.

Research has shown time and again that to maintain a healthy weight, we need to eat foods with less fat and added sugars and to take more exercise.”

Eric schlosser quotes “OVER THE LAST THREE DECADES, fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society. An industry that began with a handful of modest hot dog and hamburger stands in southern California has spread to every corner of the nation, selling a broad range of foods wherever paying customers may be found. Fast food is now served at restaurants and drive-throughs, at stadiums, airports, zoos, high schools, elementary schools, and universities, on cruise ships, trains, and airplanes, at K- Marts, Wal-Marts, gas stations, and even at hospital cafeterias. In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion. Americans now spend more money on fast food than on higher education, personal computers, computer software, or new cars. They spend more on fast food than on movies, books, magazines, newspapers, videos, and recorded music — combined.”(Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser, 2000)

The Road Not Taken

Robert Frost is the author of the poem The Road Not Taken, he is a man of many faces. He has written poems and books explaining why humans are the way they are. Unfortunately, it seems to me that this leads to a generalization of the human species as a whole. Along the way in his writings he has made blanket statements about human nature and what he believes is the right way to go about choices and crossroads in life. Also, he has established himself as a great metaphorical writer on many levels. He has written works that deal on religion and politics but never really saying exactly what it’s about. This makes the reader need to look deep into the rhetoric and past the surface, just look into the real soul of the piece. (more…)
