Abortion

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by loss or destruction of the fetus before birth (Hogue 1). It’s a topic that is almost always charged with emotion. Abortion has been practiced since ancient times in almost every culture. Despite humankind’s long exposure to the topic, they can still find no common outlook on it.

Abortion has been around since the beginning of civilization. Dates as early as 53 B.C.E. show evidence that abortions took place (Rein 4). Abortions have been done approved or disapproved in almost every culture throughout history. Even in ancient times no common ground could be established on the subject. In Ancient Assyria aborting a baby was punishable by death. Ancient Greeks and Romans on the other hand, promoted abortion as a form of population control. In fact some of the most revered philosophers in history, such as Plato (428-347 B.C.E.) and Aristotle (384-322 B.C.E.) strongly approved the use abortion. On the other side Hippocrates (460-370 B.C.E.) and Pythagorean (unknown) two also revered philosopher, had a very different view. They both disapproved of use abortion (Rein 4). (more…)

Economic Priorities

The United Stated of America is commonly referred to as a melting pot. The fact that we as a nation can encompass so many different cultures, religions, and economic aspects is amazing. Even though we intertwine these cultural differences in a respectful manner, we can’t help at times to become bias towards others customs and lifestyles. Many questions arise about this subject. Can we effectively live together and respect others cultures and values? I began to examine this topic by exploring two texts: a short story written by B. Traven called “Assembly Line,” and a chapter out of Alan Thein Durning’s “How Much Is Enough” named “The Conundrum of Consumption”. (more…)

Nature vs Nurture

Nature versus nurture, this statement causes quite a controversy, whether inherited genes or the environment influences and effects development of personality (our behavior, intelligence, and ability). Social scientists have struggled with this issue for centuries, whether our development is born (nature) or made (nurture). Some believe that it is strictly our genes; others believe it is the environment, and still others believe it is based on both, our genes and the environment. Either way, the debate continues on and will for centuries to come. There is still no clear conclusion to this debate and probably never will.

The nature side of this debate argues that a person development is based on what they are born with genetically. It is apparent that genes provide humans with their own physical equipment, our beginnings. (more…)

Trip to Wonderland

I closed my eyes. It was early morning and the airplane just took off. I was going on another fantastic vacation with my family. It was my first trip to the West Coast. It was planned to be a ski trip, but for me it was more than just that. It was another adventure, something new that would leave joyful memories about my time in the United States of America.

We landed in Portland, Oregon, rented a car, and headed toward Mount Hood. It was marvelous to observe how the weather and nature was changed during our drive to the mountain. Gradually the snow appeared. We even had to put tire chains on the car. Giant and mighty pine trees towered over the road. We entered a winter wonderland. The landscape was impressive. I felt as if I were transported back in time to my childhood, to the fairy tales my mom read to me. During our trip we visited two mountains:  Mount Hood and Mount Bachelor. The second one located south of the first one. For this reason, the scenery was different too, the appearance varied. If Mount Hood was mightier, Mount Bachelor was more graceful. The size of the trees, the branches, and the shape was dissimilar. (more…)

Can We Cheat Life?

After reading watching a film by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber called The Butterfly Effect once more I went to smoke my usual cigarette before sleep and suddenly discovered a new side of this film. For those who didn’t see the film I can say in few words its main idea. The main character got an ability to go back to past and to change some episodes of his life. And every time he changed a little episode his whole life took a completely different direction. It reflects the main idea of Chaos Theory which states that even a light move of butterfly wing in one part of the world can cause a destructive hurricane in another part of the world (Edward N. Lorenz).  I think it means that all events in our world are connected and every event causes a chain of other events. It’s an interesting theory and I seem to believe it but my essay is not about this. In that film the man got a chance to correct his mistakes made in past to improve his current life. And this is a dream of any person. Some of you can say that you are never sorry for your mistakes but it’s not true. Instead of declaring this life position which seems to sound cool, you’d better look deeper inside of yourself and find out if it’s really true. Everyone is sorry for some deeds. (more…)

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

America has always been known for its many freedoms: religion, speech, press, to bear arms, and the right to a fair and speedy trial.  Thomas Jefferson said in the Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”.  America is world-renowned for this philosophy and yet there are still groups of people who feel discriminated against.  In today’s society, the greatest dilemma we face is with sexual orientation.

At a park bench, two men are kissing.  At a nearby coffee shop, two women are holding hands.  Why do people stare and look down upon these couples, but not on a man and woman couple?  The issue of gay rights has always been a matter of discussion in America and probably always will be.  The site selection took place in Los Angeles, a city of great diversity.  We welcome different races and religions with open arms and the state of California has always been Democratic with the majority of the people living there liberals. Aspasia’s Rhetoric

It is a relatively new practice to consider women in history and to examine the possible impact of their feminine perspectives. On the tails of Great Man Theory which relied on the biographies of great men at the exclusion of all other contributors, it is now far more acceptable to focus on societal and environmental factors that influenced history and to take account of previously excluded groups of people, including the contributions of women. Think of Aspasia and her persuasion on ancient thinking. When studying women like Aspasia, we raise a variety of significant questions relating to the influence of their feminine perspectives, hypothesizing that they voiced a feminine perspective at all. Judging from the fragments we have available to us concerning Aspasia one could argue that she does introduce a kind of rhetoric that is particularly female. (more…)
